### Market definition and scope

The resident-agent control plane sits between a developer and the long-lived software their agents installed. It answers four questions that no current tool answers together: which agent processes are resident right now; what each one can reach in the filesystem, the network and the credential stores; what each has actually sent outbound in the last day; and how to stop or restrict any of them without uninstalling a harness.

The boundary is important because the adjacency is crowded. It is not endpoint detection and response, which is built for enterprises and thinks in signatures rather than in agents with charters. It is not a general application firewall — Little Snitch does binary allow/deny per connection and has no model of what an agent is doing. And it is not a vendor dashboard, because no vendor will build a panel that places a competitor's agent next to its own.

Its unit of value is the sentence a contractor can put in front of a client: here is what ran on this machine, what it could reach, and what it sent.

Two vendor-published behaviours define the market. Namecheap disabling a user's entire domain portfolio (695 points / 366 comments) is not an agent story, but it belongs in the same mental category for the buyer: infrastructure that holds your work can be removed without warning, and the affected person finds out from the consequences.

### Why now

Residency became default rather than optional. A tool that runs once can be reviewed at the moment of use; a self-updating daemon cannot be reviewed at all, because what you approved is not what is running a week later. That shift happened this quarter and it is the whole reason a control plane is suddenly a product rather than a nice idea.

The vendors' own disclosures created the demand. When a company publishes that its agent transmits transcripts, it is telling the market the behaviour exists and that the company considers it acceptable. For a developer under an NDA, that is the moment the question stops being abstract.

Courtship of this space by larger vendors is limited by platform policy. Monitoring other applications' network traffic requires entitlements, notarised installers and a defensible consent story — the kind of work a large company avoids and a small one can own.

### Market maturity

Early. There is no category name, no incumbent, and no shared vocabulary for 'agent reach'. The three October products approximate parts of it. In a mature market this would be a feature of an endpoint suite; in an early market, the first product that gets consent and clarity right defines what the category means.
